Job Description

The consultant will join the Biodiversity team within the Earth and Environment business unit, working in close liaison with the South African and international permitting and environmental impact assessment (EIA) teams, as well as the mine rehabilitation and closure teams.

The role will be based in our Johannesburg office, and will include opportunities to work on technically challenging projects – primarily in South Africa, and throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The role will be ideally suited to an early career professional keen to grow their ecology expertise, whilst pursuing their passion for for nature and a drive to work in the biodiversity and ecology sector.

As a Graduate/ Assistant Ecologist, your role will focus on assisting with undertaking a range of terrestrial, wetland and aquatic surveys and subsequent data analysis and reporting, in collaboration with senior colleagues, for projects throughout South Africa. The role will require periods of working away from home whilst on site, and will otherwise be office-based, with opportunities to work from home.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with conducting baseline aquatic/wetland/terrestrial ecosystem studies to inform biodiversity impact assessments, management plans and offsetting plans.
  • Compile and analyse field data for utilisation in baseline reports and impact assessments.
  • Write accurate and concise baseline reports and impact assessments to a high standard, for submission in support of Environmental Authorisation and Water Use License Applications.
  • Participate in survey design, proposal scoping and costing.
  • Develop strong working relationships with internal and external clients through project delivery.
  • Coordination/management of specialist subcontractors.
  • Project management and administration tasks.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment.

Qualifications

  • Relevant BSc (Hons) Degree.
  • Membership of relevant professional or voluntary organisation/s advantageous.
  • High levels of flexibility and motivation.
  • Full driving licence.
  • 1-2 years practical experience advantageous (graduate).
  • 2 plus years practical experience required for Assistant role.

  • Enthusiasm for ecology and the environment in South Africa.
  • Ability to work well in a team and use initiative to resolve issues arising in the field.
  • Excellent communication skills including strong technical report writing and presentation skills.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and organisational skills.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to deliver work on time.
  • Ensure compliance with internal WSP management system procedures.
  • Good knowledge of South African biodiversity and enthusiasm for ecology and the environment.
  • Ability to manage personal time and productivity under pressure, understanding personal fiscal responsibility and productivity in a consulting environment.
  • Computer literate, inclusive of a strong understanding of the Microsoft software suite.
  • Other software literacy beneficial (e.g. ArcGIS, Google Earth).
